"Poverty is the worst form of violence". Ghandi
"The real tragedy of the poor is the poverty of their aspirations". Adam Smith
All around the world poverty exist. In certain neighborhoods poverty is on a higher percent, and in certain neighborhood poverty might not be about what you have but how much of it do you have. Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. Being in poverty doesn’t mean you cannot live, but it means it hard to pay for your expenses. But the big questions are what does poverty look like?
Also what does democratic poverty look like?
Also what does democratic poverty look like?
I Believe poverty looks like more fast food restaurants in a neighborhood, than supermarkets. With the evidence in my neighborhood there are about five supermarkets, and around fifth teen fast food restaurants. Which promotes that a hamburger, french fries, and a shake is better than a healthier homemade meal. The reason why fast food restaurants are still in business, and the quantity is so high is because availability. If someone has three dollars, and there is a McDonalds and a Shop rite which one would you choose? Knowing myself I would choose that McDonalds. This scenario can be applied to people who live in poverty. If you can get a meal for less than seven dollars that fills you up, why would you spend twenty dollars on the same meal. Especially if you have a family, take that twenty five dollars that it might take to make fried chicken, Mash potatoes, biscuits, and something to drink, then take away eighty percent of the time and ten dollars, and you have Popeyes.
Referring back to the “Invisible Child” Paper written by the New York times editors it showed what poverty looks like. Poverty for the little girl Dasani looks like “The smaller children lie tangled beside her, their chests rising and falling under winter coats and wool blankets. A few feet away, their mother and father sleep near the mop bucket they use as a toilet. Two other children share a mattress by the rotting wall where the mice live, opposite the baby, whose crib is warmed by a hair dryer perched on a milk crate.” I feel like in certain parts of cities and state those are signs of poverty. I feel like these things don’t define poverty, but all of them together can confirm that her and her family live in poverty. Again poverty means the state of being extremely poor. From the story she even says she is poor. Her and her family want to save up, but right now the best they can do is live in poverty. Democratically Dasani's family isn't given an equal chance because of her mother and father being on drugs. They don't get to say that their living conditions are terrible because of the fact that they are on drugs, and until they clean themselves up, they will remain living their and living in democratic poverty.
